St Oswald’s Hospice is celebrating some fantastic news at the moment – the award of a £568,000 grant from The Department of Health hospice funding allocation. Here is the full story from the St Oswald’s news page…
£60M BOOST FOR LOCAL HOSPICES
The Minister for Care and Support, Norman Lamb has announced the allocation of £60m funding for hospices across England to improve the physical environment in which they provide care. The Department of Health awarded 176 grants to support a wide variety of projects, including improvements to day therapy facilities and developing outreach services to support people in their own homes.
St Oswald’s Hospice based in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne can now update areas in both their Adult Inpatient Unit and Children and Young Adults Service thanks to an award of over £568,000.
This is the third capital grant programme delivered by the Department of Health and administered by Help the Hospices, the leading charity supporting hospice care throughout the UK.
Welcoming the announcement, James Ellam, Chief Executive said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant, which will help us to better support adults, young adults, children and families from across the North East. St Oswald’s is continually adapting to meet the changing needs of patients and families and this grant will be used to benefit well being and improve facilities for patients and families who access our care.”
Together, hospices in the UK care for 360,000 people each year, including patients and their families and carers. The majority of this care is provided in peoples’ own homes, but people can also access day care, in-patient care and outpatient services within hospice buildings. Hospices are reliant on voluntary donations to run their vital services and collectively have to raise more than £1.5 million every single day from their local community.
Due to the exceptional demand for this scheme, the vast majority of projects were awarded a proportion of the full amount requested. In these challenging times, investment in hospices is vital so they can modernise and expand in order to meet the growing needs of the communities they serve.

As well as goverment funding, private donations and income from their charity shops (above), the staff and volunteers at the hospice take a creative approach to their fundraising. St Oswald’s provides hospice care to adults, young adults and children from across the North East. No charge is made for the service, ensuring care is available for all. Annual running costs now exceed £9.5million of which £6.5million must be raised through voluntary giving. To find out more about St Oswald’s please visit their website: www.stoswaldsuk.org
