The Northern Design Festival will take place across Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland from 10th – 20th October. Celebrating the theme of Create:Digital, a mixture of exhibitions, events, talks, workshops and a conference will all be squeezed into the ten day design feast.
The theme for 2013 examines the recent advances in digital technologies that have impacted designer’s work and processes leading to the development of highly creative work, which only a few short years ago would have been considered unachievable.
We see a welcome return of the curated selling exhibition, Design Event MART, featuring over 25 designers from the North of England, and a newly curated illustration exhibition aptly named Illustrate will feature the work of ten professional northern illustrators. These exhibitions will take place at our new festival hub, the Globe Gallery in Newcastle.
There will be a seminal exhibition at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, featuring work from internationally renowned designers such as Dominic Wilcox, Michael Young and fashion powerhouse Issey Miyake showcasing products made via new digital methods including 3D printing, 3D scanning and coding amongst others.
The festival has also commissioned a generative artwork by Matt Pearson using data from their Twitter followers to translate into beautiful form. Visitors who follow Design Event, take a look and see if you can spot yourself!
